After the 50thanniversary of Igor Stravinsky, this tribute to Sergei Rachmaninov on the 150thanniversary of his birth renews the magical thread that links music and dance. At the piano will be Beatrice Rana—who first began to ‘due’ with dance steps here in Ravenna—and Massimo Spada. They will alternate between the Preludes and the Études-Tableaux, or in dialogue with the dancers on stage. Like Stravinsky, the Russian-born Rachmaninov later settled in America, but unlike him, he did not devote so much attention to ballet. However, it is because of the gentle nature of his compositions, the fluidity of the notes, and the butterfly lightness of his melodies that choreographers often ‘steal’ from his works. The programme features Uwe Scholz’s Sonata, choreographed to the Andante from Rachmaninov’s Sonata in G Minor op. 19, as well asthe world premiere of a choreography by Sacha Riva and Simone Repele on the Symphonic Dances, op. 45.

Canto per un poeta innamorato (Song for a Poet in Love), a segment of the project Tre baci per Micha (Three Kisses for Micha), stages a homage to van Hoecke, the international artist and polyglot of the scene that passed away on 7 August last. The Russian-Belgian choreographer was deeply in love with Italy—and reciprocated. So much so that he made it another homeland, with Ravenna as his second home. Three kisses on the cheeks were his usual greeting, which are said to express a desire to be remembered. And so it will be in this fresco of the visions and places of his art, created by Micha’s loving work and life partner, Miki Matsuse, with the support of his many friends and collaborators. In it, fragments from his famous creations, like La dernière danseor Le Voyage, will be combined with performances in his eclectic style, veiled with melancholic poetry.

premiere

A harsh, wild landscape, seething with mud and fire, is the backdrop to Monica Casadei’s Inferno. With her company, Artemis, the Ferrara-born choreographer interprets selected tercets from Dante’s first Cantica in an allegorical work blending the sacred with the profane. Inferno – La Terra del Fuoco is a daring exploration in nine acts, where scene shifting happens in full sight with the contribution of several Italian artists, in Casadei’s typical tradition of linguistic métissage. A primordial dance made of spasms and drives, where the bestial balances the divine on a score that combines Dante’s words with the passionate music of Astor Piazzolla and the solemn dignity of Verdi’s Requiem. A chimerical, shuddering hell, till we come forth to rebehold the stars.
